What Energy and Heat Recovery Ventilators Do
ERV and HRV systems are devices that use the air inside your living space to change the temperature of the air brought into it from outside. This is how they recover energy: you’ve already paid money to heat and cool the air in your home, and the HRV or ERV system uses that to heat or cool an incoming flow of fresh outdoor air. The stale indoor air is then exhausted, and you end up with fresh air that’s been pre-heated or pre-cooled.
Here’s an example of how it works. On a chilly day, an HRV system draws in a current of fresh, but cold air from outside. It then passes it through a heat exchanger along with a current of heated air from indoors. The heat moves from the indoor air and warms up the incoming air. The now heated fresh air continues into the house, and the stale air is sent outside. Flip the process around in winter—it works in all seasons.
Putting ERV and HRV Systems to Work for You
Heat and energy recovery ventilators operate a bit differently from each other. An energy recovery ventilator allows for moisture to move between the air currents, while a heat recovery ventilator keeps the two currents separate. This means an ERV can help control humidity levels, although an HRV can sometimes work better in extreme cold temperatures. You can trust your HVAC technicians to find the ideal installation to meet your needs, so you’ll enjoy both superior air quality and a reduction on your energy expenditures.
