Strangest Things Found in Drains & Plumbing

While you never want to face a drain clog, most of them are easy to break down and get your plumbing working again the way it should. But there are some times that we face very unusual clogs that are caused by less obvious objects. Thing that will make you wonder how such an object ever got into your drains.

If you have been searching for plumbers in Okotoks because of a tough clog in your drain, you’ve reached the right team. You can keep reading to learn more about some of the unusual causes for drain clogs, and how our technicians can help get to the root of the problem and find a solution.

Unusual Causes for Drain Clogs

Most of the time a drain clog happens because some particles of soap, food, and even hair go down your drain and stick to the sides of your pipes. Then these particles begin to attract other particles until a clog forms that blocks water flow in an entire section of your plumbing. But there have been times that our team has shown up to break down a drain clog only to find that the source of the clog is an extremely unusual object. Examples include:

  • Jewelry
  • Utensils
  • False teeth
  • Coins
  • Toys
  • Small rodents

In many cases homeowners are left wondering, how did that even get into my plumbing system? But, these things do happen. Sometimes unusual objects enter your plumbing system and cause a blockage, creating a drain clog that is harder than normal to break up. When this happens, our team has to use different techniques to get rid of the clog.

Addressing Drain Clogs

First, we may need to complete a video pipe inspection to identify the source of the clog. We use a small video camera that enters your pipes on a snake like tool so that we can see exactly what we are dealing with without any negative impact to your plumbing system. By using a video camera, we can identify a clog more precisely to know exactly where to begin taking your plumbing apart and clear away the clog. Without a video pipe inspection, there’s a lot of guesswork involved and the project may take longer to complete.

The other benefit of a video pipe inspection is that we can see exactly what is causing the clog so we know what tools to use to get rid of it. In some cases, we can use hydro jetting to break down a tough clog. But if an unusual object has made its way down your drain and is lodged in your plumbing system, we have to take those pipes apart to get the object out. In some cases, we may even need to replace sections of your plumbing, depending on what is wrong.

Preventing Drain Clogs

The good news is, you can take steps to prevent drain clogs from ever happening. If the drains around your home do not already have covers on them, you can invest in some. Ideally, you want a very fine mesh drain cover that allows very little room for particles to go down the drain.

The more that you can capture in a mesh drain cover and throw in the trash, the better. Even the smallest particles entering your drains can lead to clogs in the future. Plus, sturdier covers also prevent those large and unusual objects from accidentally rinsing down your drain.
