Case 335142: The Phantom Flushing Toilet

Stacey and Wil moved into a 24-year-old home. It was their first home and they were eager to spend their first night in their new home. After a calm evening consisting of their favorite movie and lots of buttery popcorn, Stacey and Wil fell asleep exhausted from the move.
Stacey awoke to hear the toilet flushing. She shifted over sleepily to find Wil sleeping soundly beside her. She listened horrified as the toilet tank was filling and elbowed Wil.
Will stirred, “What is it?”
“The toilet flushed by itself,” whispered Stacey.
“That’s ridiculous,” sighed Wil. “You were probably dreaming. Go back to sleep, tomorrow is a long day.”
Stacey protested but soon rolled over and succumbed to her fatigue—no further sound came from the bathroom.
The next day at 3 a.m., both Stacey and Wil were dead asleep. There was no sound in the house when, suddenly, the whoosh of the toilet flushing woke them both. They sat up bolt upright and looked at each other.
“Go see what is going on,” breathed Stacey.
“Do you think I really want to see some ghost on the toilet? No way.”
Again, as the toilet filled they listened, but neither of them moved till the reassuring light of morning gave them strength.
As the morning light poured through the curtains, Stacey tried to ease her nerves with something familiar. She pulled out her phone and took a scroll through her Facebook posts and saw Ace Plumbing being recommended by a friend. So she set up an appointment for a technician to come out. They set up a time so that Wil could be there too and that hopefully the two of them could convince the technician that they weren’t crazy.
When the technician arrived, he listened to Stacey and Wil tell their story. Wil thought for sure the technician would roll his eyes and dismiss their concerns.
Instead, their technician looked at them knowingly and said, “This is not as uncommon as you may expect, and you are not alone thinking your toilet was haunted.
He explained that the problem stemmed from a leak in the toilet tank. Stacey and Wil looked at each other in disbelief. Other people had had this problem too and survived. They decided to replace the phantom flushing toilet and thanked the technician. They knew they would now be able to sleep soundly ever after.
