Can Heat Pumps Handle Calgary’s Cold Weather?

You’re in the right place if you’ve been considering a heat pump installation for your home. We have customers ask fairly frequently whether or not a pump can stand up to the cold weather we experience here in Calgary. The short answer is yes, and you can read more to learn about why a heat pump is a great solution for our climate.

Then give our team a call to schedule your in-home assessment for heat pump installation in Calgary. We can help you learn how a heat pump would work for your home and review your options so you can select the best system for your home and family.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

A heat pump works differently than other types of heaters and furnaces. Heat pumps are most similar to a central air conditioner since they use refrigerant. But heat pumps have some key components like a reversing valve that allows the refrigerant to move in the opposite direction for providing heat.

Furnaces use combustion or heating elements to create heat and transfer it into the air. A heat pump absorbs heat from outside and transfers it into your home instead. It may be hard to believe, but even when it is cold outside there is still some heat in the air that a heat pump can absorb. When the refrigerant cycles outside to absorb heat, it releases it into the air inside and then blows that air through your home.

Selecting the Right Heat Pump

The one big problem with a heat pump is that the colder it is outside, the less heat there is in the air. And here in Calgary, we face some pretty cold winters. A standard heat pump would struggle with efficiency when trying to keep up with heating your home on those coldest days of winter. But you do have other options.

If you do go with a standard heat pump, you can add on a small furnace, making it a dual-fuel system. This type of heat pump benefits from the added heating boost as a small furnace. You still enjoy the energy efficiency of a heat pump, but you also have the peace of mind that the add-on furnace can kick on when it is needed.

There’s also a cold-weather heat pump that works a little differently than a standard heat pump. If you don’t want an add-on furnace, a cold-weather heat pump is the way to go. It uses inverter technology and a variable-speed compressor to boost heating power when you need it, making it a great solution for our area.

Heat Pump Benefits

Heat pumps are a great way to replace your existing air conditioner and heater with a single system. You may save some space in your home by having two separate units. Plus, heat pumps are safer to operate than gas furnaces. They don’t actually produce any heat, so you don’t face the same risks that you do with heating elements or an open flame.

Heat pumps are also highly energy efficient, so they can save you money on heating compared to your other options. When you switch to a heat pump, you may see a difference in your monthly energy bills for heating. This is especially true if you invest in a high-efficiency heat pump.
