Is Your Furnace Ready for the Holidays?

tools-laid-out-like-christmas-tree

You may have a holiday checklist with things that you need to complete ahead of your celebrations. Whether you are hosting gatherings with family or just enjoying quiet time at home, a furnace checkup needs to be on your list. You want to make sure that your furnace is ready to keep your home warm.

If you think you need to schedule an appointment for heating repair in Calgary, AB, now is the time. It’s better to stay ahead of potential furnace problems by taking preventative action. You can keep reading to learn more about steps you can take as a homeowner to make sure that your furnace is ready for the holiday season.

Check Ductwork

No matter how well your furnace is working, if the ductwork is not secure then heat will not reach your home efficiently. When you think about checking your furnace ahead of the winter season, make sure that ductwork is on your list of considerations.

Conduct a visual inspection of your home’s ductwork, looking for drafts, holes, or tears. If you notice anything out of place or disconnected, give our team a call. When you’re checking your ductwork, you should do so while your furnace is on so that you can listen for rattling or whistling sounds that indicate your ductwork has holes allowing air to escape.

Review Thermostat Settings

It’s easy to take your thermostat for granted. It seems so easy to select your settings. What could go wrong? But it’s always a good idea to double check your thermostat settings. Someone may have bumped the thermostat or it may be miscalibrated and impacting how well your furnace can operate.

If you haven’t already scheduled professional service for your furnace, now is a great time to do so. In addition to checking your ductwork as we mentioned above, we can also check your thermostat calibration to make sure it is optimized for your furnace.

Change Air Filters

Changing the air filter on time every 1-3 months is the single most important thing you can do for your furnace. The air filter protects the working components inside of your furnace, as well as the rest of your home, from dust and dirt that get trapped instead of passing through and mixing in with clean air.

Check Ventilation

Your furnace has a ventilation pipe that extends from the furnace to the outside of your home. It is important to check the exhaust vent outside and make sure it is clean and free from clogs. Otherwise, exhaust air can get trapped inside your furnace and cause problems or mix in with clean air blowing into your home.

One sign that can indicate exhaust problems is bad odors coming from the air in your furnace. Exhaust air has a very distinct odor like rotten eggs or burning gas. You might think that you have a gas leak when exhaust air is really the problem.
